Although this is an old forum post, I just want to say thank you for posting it. I'm a martial artist who loves the traditional weapons (nunchaku, bo, sai, etc) and I believe weapons play can keep the body healthy (waist flexibility, strong legs, etc). I saw some videos of Arakawa-Sensei-s TokanRyu as you mentioned....very powerful style! :)

I promote sport blowgun, nunchaku is another health method too which still unknown for most of people. Free style nunchaku is popular in youtube.com though, classical swings is more easy
and worth for health fittness. I invented new easy swinging styles and practice every day.
Sokanryu stick is 45 cm long weighs 250 gr connecting interval is 3cm---4cm, For begginer
attention for tennis elbow. More light nunchaku can be made by various material.

I'd always felt the nunchaku were dangerous for most people - I've seen more "Hey watch this idiot" videos with them than otherwise.  But you guys have got me interested!  They're easy to make, but hard to learn, I assume?  Any advice on how I might get started?

Thanks in advance for any information!

Gene.

If it was me, I'd start with some SOFT ones! [image]

LOL! Those foam training ones seem to be so....light and short, and wide. I ordered a bunch of them for a Nunchaku basics workshop I was holding for my juniors Kajukenbo students, and some kids had problems with the foam making the nunchaku too wide. And they're too light, and the cord was too long. Boo.

Thank you! Out of curiosity, what is the translation of "Muyu" in your style of MuyuRyu?

I 've always like Nunchaku since I was a child....I studied Butokukan Karate for many years and loved practicing bo, sai, tonfa, nunchaku, etc).

Mu means dream yu- means ply. My style is based upon Sokanryu Soke Busen Arakawa  god of nunchaku. Short connection and long stick are the features. Blowgun and nunchaku have same
background, worth preserving and promoting.  I sent DVD to Seattle yesterday.
I will send DVD to anyone who wants it. All free.

Fukiyaman, Lady_yaya, or anyone for that matter, familiar with Rochin and Tinbe?  That one fascinates me, but find find anyone that knows it, much less to instruct.

Hi pgandy: No, I haven't heard of anyone that teaches Tinbe-Rochin. I do Wushu sword and shield, and spear (not with a shield), but I'm sure its nowhere similar to spear and shield. If you find info on it, let me know! :)
